This has multiple ironies, the Beatles 'Back in the USSR', for example, and the central idea that freedom is a social concept that was attempted in the DDR in regard economic and cultural development. That it fell into surveillance and the building of the Berlin Wall is treated with an apocalyptic glee by the West. But the vision remains. A notion of freedom based on sociality, not individuality. We don't know what that means, but we know it is there.
